President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that government will in the next 24 hours issue a statement on its position on the Bawku conflict mediation report.

The President gave the assurance after receiving the report which was presented by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 at the Jubilee House.

“I am pleased about Otumfuo report and I can assure him that government would look at this report and within the next 24 hours government will issue a statement on its definitive position on the report,” the President noted.

The President acknowledged the Asantehene’s effort by mediating and engaging the parties involved for a resolution of the conflict.

“Today, I am pleased that we have been able to come to the end of that journey and we are embarking on the next leg of the journey,” he said.

President John Mahama urged the Peace Council, the National House of Chiefs and the Asantehene to proceed with the mediation in the matter for a reconciliation between the parties involved.

“But it is my hope that the National Peace Council, the House of Chiefs and Otumfuo himself and all the religious bodies would go the next step of continuing the engagement between the Nayiri and Bawku Naaba to ensure that we are able to bring reconciliation between the two groups,” Mahama stressed.

Presenting the report, the Asantehene said a committee will be set up to begin the reconciliation process.

“Mr. President, I want to suggest that I was going to meet them again, we set up a mediation process and everything. The way things have happened, we include the Peace Council and everything, we nominate some lawyers from each side, form a committee and we start the reconciliation process,” Asantehene noted.

The Asantehene revealed that upon engagement with parties involved in the conflict, it appeared both sides had kept arms and weapons. He suggested to the President to find a way for these weapons to be retrieved in return for an appeasement.

“Whiles talking to them, I also realized that arms and weapons where there, and all those we spoke to I think we can find a way to get a safe place for them to go and leave it.

“Maybe, an appeasement of some GHC500 not by the government but by the National Peace Council, myself and some people. I tested the pulse and I know it can be done so now it is left with you to implement what we have said,” Otumfuo added.

He further cautioned the general public and persons of either side of the conflict to refrain from making pronouncements which could jeopardise the peace process.

“Almost a year ago, the people of Ghana handed the mandate of the governance of Ghana to you Your Excellency and you wasted no time in reaffirming the mandate of the Bawku mediation.

“By the Grace of God, we are able to assemble here to present to Your Excellency the report of the mission you entrusted to us. We present the report for your kind consideration and whatever action you and your government consider appropriate,” he noted.

On Monday, December 1, the Asantehene rounded off his mediation effort in the Bawku chieftaincy crisis with a face-to-face meeting between the contending parties at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall, Kumasi.

Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of Tarana Traditional Area and spokesperson of the Naayiri, led a 30-member delegation to represent His Majesty Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Naayiri and Overlord of the Mamprugu and the Mamprusis while Naba Tambis Baalug Paramount Chief of Pusiga led the delegation representing the Bawku Naaba Zugraan Asigri Aburgrago Azoka II and the Kusasi people.

Cletus Avoka acted as spokesperson for the Kusasi delegation with Dr. Issah as spokesperson for the Naayiri and Mamprusis. Both delegations comprised of Chiefs, Lawyers, Academies, Opinion and Youth Leaders.
His Majesty thanked both sides for their civility and maturity and urged them to remember that whatever the outcome of the mediation, they would have to live together as brothers and sisters.

He urged the leaders to start preparing the minds of their supporters to be prepared to put an end permanently to violence and disorder in their communities.
